Recorded live at Opéra Comique Paris
It was a risky and somewhat crazy venture. When Lambert Wilson decided to ignore the established barriers
normally separating musical comedy and ‘classical’ American music, he was immediately laying himself open to
criticism and misunderstanding. Nuit Américaine was altogether a highly complex, delicate undertaking right up to
its finalization in the present recording.
Everything started with Lambert Wilson’s passionate interest in the composer Stephen Sondheim, whom he first
discovered in London through the show Side by Side by Sondheim, where two women and a man gradually
present Sondheim’s work through their various conversations. He then decided to stage a show (requiring no less
than five vocalists!) that would be entirely devoted to Stephen Sondheim. Unfortunately the prevarications of the
composer and the complications arising out of the lawyers’ negotiations made the venture impossible. But
Lambert Wilson was not a man to be easily stalled if his passion was at stake, so with the support of Régis Huby,
he started to angle his project in another direction to include other American composers of the pre-and post-
Sondheim eras. The two fellow-artists set about finding scores and recordings, exchanged news and views about
their respective discoveries and points of view, and after organising some listening sessions, they finally
assembled a repertoire of about thirty songs.
